Once upon a time, I took a break from swimming for a whole year. I like to call that time my senior year of high school. I would walk past the pool with some longing, but i was very busy doing other things and swimming was generally off my radar. Fortunately, oh so fortunately, i stumbled back to the pool once I started Grinnell. After those first few weeks when I thought my body would fall apart from overuse or lack of sleep, I never looked back.
I've now been outside of the pool since about May. Although there isn't a pool down the hall like back in high school, there is one just down the street, but I'll get back to that in a second. Swimming always wore on my shoulders, the aches and pains are familiar to anyone who has swam for a long time even if they do not have serious shoulder problems. But in those first weeks after leaving the water I swear my shoulders hurt more as my muscles shifted around. Now almost all of my arm and shoulder muscles are gone. Not only do I feel scrawny, my shoulders are wicked bony (okay, bonier than they already were anyways)
But, with a little bit of luck, and perhaps by putting this here as a reminder for myself and everyone, the return to the pool may be imminent! I went to a meet this weekend with a friend and her dad and he used his amazing connections to get me a little chat with some of the head guys at the team that practices just down the street ! Fingers crossed its not too expensive!
