First day blues

Ah yes, the young intrepid new employee ventures off to the office for the first time. Sleep was lost last night, I woke up way too early, left my apartment way too early, the usual starting off jitters.

It turns out, all that anticipation was for naught. After a short chat with the executive director of the place I spent the remainder of my day reading reports about housing issues. Now I understand that learning is an important part of my job, in fact it is essential to getting started with this new job. But the reading I had I could have gotten done in two hours if i so desired or if there had been a promise for real work once I was done with the reading. Alas, no work. In fact, I talked to someone else who started in the same type of position two weeks ago and she said that she has yet to do really any significant work. Another volunteer who started in February just got her first independent project this month.

Now, this will just not fly. I am doing this whole service and poverty immersion thing because I want to do service. Not sit around the office reading online comics. Well, there can be comics sometimes I suppose. I'm the kind of girl that needs to be busy all the time and I am preparing myself to stick up for myself in order to get work.

Anyways, it was only the first day, I promise to be more positive in the future. And other than almost getting hit by a car on my post-work run, its been a lovely evening full of yummy spaghetti and cookies!
