I feel like I've been writing a lot about this trip to Iowa, even before it has taken place, but please, bear with me. My finally reflection on it, for now at least, is that I think this has been one of the longest stretches where I haven't gone anywhere and maybe that's why i'm so excited at the prospect. Looking back, throughout high school and college I was always going somewhere for sports or some other sort of competition. Granted, getting around Chicago can take about the same time as it takes to get from home to Ankeny or Ames, but it's still the same city. I suppose last weekend I did make it out to the suburbs which was a very different place from Chicago proper but I was only out of the city for an hour. This weekend I am getting out! I do like the city quite a bit but after being more mobile until recently it is exciting to be on the move!
Following up on the apple fest: I made applesauce. Here is a little confession...sometimes, I am a little cocky with my cooking, and sometimes, it backfires. The applesauce was one of these times. I had looked up a few recipes while at work but didn't write any down thinking I had the basic concept. Wrong! Well not all that wrong, I was just over zealous with the cinnamon so I have dark brown (and quite thick) applesauce. It was quite good spread over bread... Much more successful in my recent baking exploits was bread pudding. Now, I make my own bread which is lovely but unfortunately I don't always eat it all before it starts to get a little fury. To solve this problem, I turned some in to delicious bread pudding, inspired by my friend Emily's similar solution to excess bread. It was so successful, I had it all gone within 24 hours. That's right, it was a 24 hour bread pudding.
