So it probably would have been more appropriate for me to post all of this last Sunday, but what are you gonna do? Like i said in my last post, it's my blog so i'm in charge. I think the reason i didn't post right away is mostly because i was so busy last weekend, all weekend.
Friday: A Grinnell in Chicago event brought a bunch of Grinnellians to the Bergoff restaurant for food, drinks and good company. It was great seeing older alums that i haven't seen for a while and also being welcomed into the alumni community in the Chicago area. Of course there was also the after party, and the after-after party that helped make the evening lots of fun.
Saturday: Brunch and then relaxing made up most of the day, but i did make it way out to Glenco for dinner with friends and an exciting train ride back into the city.
Sunday: The day started bright and early, around 6am. You may be wondering what would get me out of bed so early, and let me tell you i was thinking the same thing around 6:05 Sunday morning. Well, it was for a 10K! I've been running a lot more frequently recently and decided that doing a real run would be a good way to test myself and find a baseline in case i wanted to get more involved in long distance running. So there i found myself on a blustery Sunday morning, before dawn, waiting for the train to come so i could begin my trek to the race. I should mention that the race saga was made more interested by a dash of Emily clumsiness- i mildly twisted my ankle three days before the race. While that definitely added stress to the race, it didn't actually bother me at all to run on it. Anyways, i messing up my story line. The race was in beautiful Montrose harbor so I got to run along the lake and enjoy pretty views. Since this was my first race, and the first time that I've ever run that far, i mostly wanted to be relaxed about it and focus on finishing. Well, and in my own competitive mind i definitely had a time that i wanted to be under to be truthful. But the race was great! I learned somethings for the next time, yes, there will be a next time, and felt really accomplished at the end. I ran it in a little bit under an hour, which was that secret time i wanted to get under so I was really happy the morning!
Sunday was also a very windy day as many of you are probably aware. So windy in fact that a tree was uprooted at my parents' house in Iowa! So windy in fact that the roof blew off of a train station in downtown! That was quite the experience for me too. Although i wasn't there at the time, i arrived at the station just a few minutes after it had happened to find the street blocked off by three fire trucks. Oh my!
