interview?

It seems interview wise, when it rains it pours. Or at least it does when you lower your expectations and really start applying to data entry and barista type jobs. I had one such interview today, or at least I think I did...

(Please note: while this was weird, I was never in any danger. Both parts of the "interview" took place in very busy, public buildings.)

So, I found a part time data entry job posting on Craig's List and decided to go for it. Why not make a little money? They got back to me a few days later via email to set up an interview. In the email, they did not mention the actually location of the interview but rather an intersection in downtown Chicago. Also, I was instructed to bring my own computer with a "locally installed software program". Several emails later I had extracted the exact address and ascertained that the software program I have on my computer would work. This morning I headed downtown to the address with instructions to meet the representative at the "one down escalator in the building". Awesome.

I showed up, found the person at the top of the down escalator and proceeded to the interview. I was emailed a file, down loaded it on my computer and then we headed across the street to the Daley Center, a large government building. Using an ancient (seriously, I thought I would have to pull out some MS Dos commands or something) database system of the City's I proceeded to actually do data entry for the next hour. I then returned to the original spot (in a food court) and emailed my spreadsheet back to the interviewer. I was told that I would be contacted about the position within a week.

Now, let's review. During this "interview" I learned nothing about the position and shared very little information about myself. Rather, I actually did data entry. I see two outcomes here:
1) this is just a sneaky racket to get people to do data entry for free. There were at least eight other people interviewed to day so that is essentially a whole day's work for free.
2) this was a test to see if i am actually any good at data entry before hiring me.
Okay, option 2 is much more likely to be the truth, but come on! I know nothing about the company! And I have an over active imagination. I think I may soon be doing top secret work for the government!

I'm not really sure how I feel about hearing back from these people. On the one hand, our interactions so far have just been kind of weird. On the other, it would be a big hit to the ego if I didn't get an offer after already doing work for them. Hmmm.
